This report describes the convergence of two important public health issues: platelet-transfusion associated bacterial sepsis1-3 and salmonellosis associated with a pet reptile.6, 7 Although the risk of sepsis may be less with single-donor platelet units than with pooled platelet concentrates, 3 more efficient apheresis instruments have increased the likelihood that multiple platelet products can be prepared from a single apheresis donor, creating a risk for sepsis in multiple recipients. Prompt recognition of the platelet transfusion as the source of sepsis is essential to prevent sepsis in subsequent recipients of platelets from the same donations. In the cases we describe, it was initially assumed that in Patient 1, sepsis was related to severe neutropenia. Similar assumptions may be common and responsible for the lack of recognition and underreporting of platelet transfusions as a source of sepsis.1, 2 The apparent rarity of salmonella as a contaminant of platelet-transfusion products may have contributed to the failure to recognize the platelet transfusion as the source of sepsis in Patient 1. We believe that the platelet donor acquired salmonellosis through handling his pet boa constrictor. The infection caused asymptomatic bacteremia at the time of his donation. He had had an episode of fever and diarrhea 18 days before donation, and these symptoms had resolved after antibiotic treatment for 5 days. The relative importance of atmospheric drag in orbital decay was compared with that of other decay factors. Videos of nine spacecraft at varying altitudes in low Earth orbit LEO ; were obtained using an image intensifier. From the analysis of these videos, deviations of satellites from their predicted paths were determined. Results from the study confirm that the most significant factor affecting the decay of LEO satellites is atmospheric drag. P-values from one-tailed t-tests of the cross-track deviations of the satellites ranged from .00018 to .045, below the level of significance of .05. This demonstrates that meaningful measurements and analysis of the orbits of artificial satellites can be made using a combination of optical equipment and digital electronics that are readily available to the amateur astronomer. This experiment was conducted to determine the plausibility of transmitting intelligible speech through the skull by means of vibration from a piezoelectric transducer. It was hypothesized that the intelligibility of speech transmitted through a skull from a piezoelectric transducer would increase with the use of a frequency filter. A three-part experiment was conducted to determine the validity of this hypothesis. The first part determined the frequency response of the piezoelectric transducer and skull bone combination based on six target frequencies. The second part was transmitting speech in the form of wellestablished phonetically balanced sentences through the skull. In the third part, the frequency equalizer was used to create a custom filter based on the results from the frequency testing. While the unfiltered speech displayed basic intelligibility based on an ALCON % test, during the third part of the experiment the intelligibility increased significantly, and the research hypothesis was accepted and vesicare.
